2020 Summer Internships

Research, Statistical Genetics Intern - STR Polymorphism

Sunnyvale, California, United States

The majority of genome-wide association studies to date are mainly focused on single nucleotide polymorphisms. Others, such as short tandem repeats (STRs) are highly polymorphic and are often times hotpots for genetic variation. Diseases such as Huntington’s and Fragile X are caused by polymorphisms in STRs; STRs have also been implicated in many complex traits. We are looking for an intern in statistical genetics for summer 2020 in the 23andMe research team to identify STR associations, and potentially causal variants, using the world’s largest cohort of phenotypes and genotypes. Your work will push forward genetic research and efforts to identify novel drug targets.

Who we are

Since 2006, 23andMe’s mission has been to help people access, understand, and benefit from the human genome. We are a group of passionate individuals pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to help turn genetic insight into better health and personal understanding.

What you’ll do

  • Implement a working pipeline for short tandem repeat imputation using the 23andMe database.
  • Impute STRs and analyze results from imputation.
  • Perform genetic association analyses using imputed STRs.

Who you are

  • Currently pursuing a PhD degree, preferably in Computational Biology, Statistics, Computer Science or a related quantitative field.
  • Solid understanding of imputation and statistical genetics.
  • Experience working with short tandem repeats in the genome.
  • Experience developing in Python / R.
  • Some experience working with HPC.
