Software Engineer Intern - Research Tools

Software engineering students of all levels wanted for our software intern opportunity! Come join us in our mission to be the world's trusted source of personal genetic information. You’ll have the opportunity to solve challenging engineering problems that come with building a highly interactive website and manipulating large amounts of data in the background. You’ll work within a small, fast-paced team that has a mix of veteran engineers and recent graduates to work on a variety of tasks.

What you’ll do
You’ll work closely with genetic researchers, product managers, and developers to design and implement a web-based tool that will help power our genetic research efforts. Our collaborative focus will give you exposure to all portions of the product development lifecycle from project kickoff through the building, shipping, and responding to iterative feedback.
Specifically, you’ll:
- Build web tools and data visualizations aimed at our scientific researchers
- Design and write automated tests to both improve the code structure and ensure high-quality releases
- Participate in code reviews both for your own and other’s code
- Learn about security and privacy best practices when dealing with sensitive data
- Work within our technology stack including Python, the scientific Python ecosystem (NumPy, Pandas, iPython), Django, Typescript, React, Rest APIs, and AWS
Who you are
- You’re pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related major
- Knowledge of Python and Typescript/Javascript
- Exposure to part of our technology stack and a strong desire to learn more!
- You enjoy building and refactoring software applications
- You have the ability to deliver well-designed high-quality code on time

Join the gene pool as part of 23andMe’s Summer Intern Class of 2020! Our Summer Internship Program is full-time for 12 weeks and provides opportunities to be involved in work that’s impactful at a mission-driven company. All internship opportunities are based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The expected start dates are in May or June depending on your school schedule. Please note, students will be responsible for their own housing and relocation. All applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
