What will you be empowered to do?

Therapeutics - Computational Biology

Sr. Scientist, Computational Biology - Target Biology

South San Francisco, California, United States

Who We Are

23andMe, the leading consumer genetics and research company, has accumulated a wealth of genotypic and phenotypic information from participants committed to improving human health through advances in genomics. Our Therapeutics team in South San Francisco leverages this data to discover and develop new treatments that can offer significant benefits for patients with serious, unmet medical needs.

This dedicated research and drug development group identifies novel targets using 23andMe's genetic database and performs preclinical research to advance programs towards clinical development. We currently have programs across several therapeutic areas, including but not limited to oncology, respiratory, and cardiovascular diseases. More information about our Therapeutics team is available at https://therapeutics.23andme.com/.

What You’ll Do

Translation of genetic signals available to 23andMe into actionable targets requires computational expertise and biological understanding to analyze, integrate and interpret results from high-throughput functional data in a way that enables efficient decision making and ultimately drives drug discovery.

We are looking for a computational biology scientist with a strong background in genetics. The ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience leading creative and independent research designing, planning, analyzing and interpreting a broad range of omics datasets with an emphasis on understanding the underlying biology.

They will extend existing target discovery efforts by developing or implementing novel analytical methods to deliver on our translational strategy; work toward identifying clinically relevant disease subtypes and associated therapeutic targets; and contribute to drive on-going therapeutic development programs.

Our team is very collaborative, and the ability to communicate ideas and results to scientists from different disciplines is key.

What You’ll Bring

  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Genetics or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years post-Ph.D. work experience, including industry experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company
  • Demonstrated experience in translating genetics into biological mechanisms
  • Experience in leading complex collaborative projects from strategic planning to deployment of analytical capabilities as well as data needed to pursue drug discovery opportunities
  • Interest in understanding molecular patho-mechanisms determining disease initiation and/or progression
  • Experience in performing integrative omics analysis (genetics, genomics, proteomics, etc.)
  • Knowledge of biology in at least one disease-relevant area
  • Demonstrated experience in processing and interpretation of functional, large scale, datasets (e.g. RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, sc/snRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics etc.)
  • Strong quantitative skills and a background in statistical data analysis
  • Experience in writing robust code in R or Python
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to convey complex computational results to colleagues from a wide range of life sciences backgrounds
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team oriented environment
  • Ability to work from 23andMe's office in South San Francisco a minimum of 2 days per week

Strong Preferred

  • Extensive experience in writing robust code in a shared development environment
  • Experience with cloud development (AWS, Azure, Google)
