This dedicated research and drug development group identifies novel targets using 23andMe's genetic database and performs preclinical research to advance programs towards clinical development. The use of biomarkers and diagnostics is central to understanding how our therapeutics work and identifying patients that benefit most from these therapies. Our Biomarker Translation function has a critical role in advancing our drug development programs and is responsible for conceptualizing and implementing biomarker strategies across our pipeline. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced, highly motivated scientist to join a newly growing team of translational biomarker scientists and technology subject matter experts and drive our biomarker and drug development effort in oncology. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in developing and executing biomarker strategies for lead programs by applying cutting edge, innovative technologies to analyze biological specimens, in support of pre-clinical and early stage clinical oncology programs at 23andMe.
The candidate will be part of a matrix organization that serves preclinical and clinical stage programs, serve as the translational science lead on project teams and manage collaborations with various lab-based teams as well as external collaborators and contract research organizations. The candidate will be responsible for determining and implementing suitable biomarkers to evaluate disease heterogeneity, target engagement, mechanism of action and predictive correlates of efficacy to help guide the development of new therapeutics to treat human cancer.
What you'll do
- Translational science lead on project teams accountable for biomarker strategies, results and timelines
- Support novel therapeutic candidates before and after transition from discovery through all phases of clinical development
- In close collaboration with discovery and development functions, leverage internal and external data, conceptualize a biomarker strategy for pipeline programs around disease heterogeneity and patient selection/stratification, target-engagement, mechanism of action and disease modification
- Oversee the implementation of biomarker strategies for novel oncology molecules in early clinical trials using state of the art protein and molecular assays on tissue and liquid biopsies to support drug development efforts
- Oversee external labs and research organizations for biosample management, assay development, tech transfer, validation and execution
- Design focused experiments, author and implement protocols, execute biomarker studies, organize data, draft technical reports and regulatory documents
What you’ll bring
- PhD with strong scientific background in immuno-oncology or immunology
- 2-4 years of industry experience in the therapeutic development space, familiar with strategies of biomarker discovery and clinical translation
- Solid experience with assay development principles (protein, nucleic acid, cellular)
- Experience with assay development and validation remotely at CROs/specialty labs
- Outstanding presentation and communication skills
- Successful demonstration of initiative, teamwork, collaboration and technical expertise as an independent and creative scientist
- Documented ability to establish and execute clinical biomarker studies
- Management of external collaborations and outsourcing through contract research organizations
- Previous involvement in clinical diagnostic assay development for pharmacodynamic monitoring as well as patient selection implementation and/or familiarity with regulatory aspects of CDx development
- Large dataset analysis
- Poise and professionalism with strong communication and influencing skills in a dynamic environment
