The Medical Affairs team, part of the larger Healthcare Operations team, is core to 23andMe’s healthcare vision and overall success. Reporting to Medical Affairs leadership, the Genetic Counselor will be a valuable contributor helping the Medical Affairs team successfully meet the needs of the company in many of these key areas: 

  • Advising on strategy for consumer and clinical health-related initiatives
  • Supporting product adoption in the clinical environment
  • Performing medical review of products and services, and influencing associated messaging to establish credibility and trust
  • Navigating health-related go-to-market friction points while observing regulatory controls and appropriate uses of medical data
  • Advising on and participating in consumer & professional education
  • Strengthening relationships with healthcare stakeholders
  • Serving internally as the voice of the medical and patient communities

What you'll do

  • Support Healthcare Operations and Medical Affairs in shaping and implementing ‘genetics forward’ clinical healthcare services that are protocol-driven, outcomes-oriented, and that leverage relevant technologies
  • Work cross-functionally to help guide development of 23andMe’s consumer-facing products, services, research efforts, company communications and marketing claims
  • Leverage genetic counseling credential and experience to support the needs of our customers in both the consumer and clinical experience
  • Serve as an unbiased, credible 23andMe resource for practicing clinicians by responding to their product inquiries and occasionally providing scientific and clinical presentations about 23andMe services
  • Support Medical Education’s efforts to create and disseminate general genetics- and health product-focused resources to medical professionals
  • Maintain professional credentials and remain in good standing with professional boards, organizations and licensing authorities
  • Maintain a focused ‘patient-centric’ and ‘do no harm’ lens on all areas of involvement
  • Seek out, understand, and represent the consensus opinion of the Medical Affairs department in all internal and external assignments, projects, and dealings
  • Maintain professional integrity in all internal and external interactions
  • Hold health inequity, access, and overall diversity, equity, and inclusion as a top priority in all business matters
  • Maintain sufficient understanding of the compliance, regulatory, and quality policies and procedures that pertain to the health-related products and related communications
  • Be an integral part of the Medical Affairs team, and larger Healthcare Operations team, providing input on projects that may fall outside of typical day-to-day tasks
  • Participate in weekly team meetings, for both Medical Affairs and Healthcare Operations 
  • Occasionally support efforts at remote locations such as clinical or education conferences

What you'll bring

  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling or equivalent from an ABGC approved genetic counseling program
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling certification
  • California Genetic Counseling License
  • Minimum of two years of clinical genetic counseling experience
  • Proven proficiency in understanding the complex interplay of genetic screening and clinical medicine and its benefits and limitations in a direct-to-consumer environment
  • Experience in polygenic scores and pharmacogenetics is preferred

Technical Requirements:

  • High attention-to-detail and accuracy
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills including proficiency in public speaking with the ability to convey genetic concepts to professionals and laypeople
  • Demonstrated decision-making, problem solving, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of computer operation and cloud & non-cloud based software (Eg. Google Docs & Mail, DropBox, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work with team members who are working remotely (Eg. Zoom, Slack)
  • Working knowledge of online clinical resources and databases (Eg. PubMed, GeneReviews, ClinVar, and other NIH resources; UpToDate, Medscape, others)
